The China Coast Guard carried out a law enforcement and control drill in waters near Huangyan Dao in the South China Sea, with an expert stating that the exercise underscores Beijing's determination to protect its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.
Zhang Chi, a professor at the National Defense University of the People's Liberation Army, said the drill focused on boarding and inspection, intercepting and preventing forced entry, and towing away foreign vessels that illegally enter waters under China's jurisdiction.
Zhang accused the Philippine side of repeatedly using government vessels and fishing boats as cover in attempts to breach the China Coast Guard's control line near Huangyan Dao and establish an illegal presence.
He said the exercises convey a clear message that any effort to erode China's sovereignty through a "salami-slicing" strategy is a pipe dream and doomed to failure. The China Coast Guard will continue to strengthen law enforcement and patrols in waters under China's jurisdiction, he added.
The drill took place on Sunday, with footage showing coast guard vessels sailing and law enforcement operations in progress.
