China Sends Fifth Aid Batch to Nepal as Mudslide Toll Reaches 1,385
China's fifth emergency aid shipment reached Kathmandu on Friday, as Nepal's mudslide death toll rose to 1,385 with 5,130 still missing.
A fifth consignment of Chinese emergency relief supplies landed at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu on Friday afternoon, carried by a Y-20 large transport aircraft of the Chinese Air Force.
The shipment includes diesel generators, medical protective masks, mortuary cabinets, DNA testing equipment and reagents, and water rescue equipment. The items are intended to assist Nepal's continuing operations in areas affected by the mudslide.
Officials from China and Nepal were present at the airport for the handover, with cargo marked "China Aid" in Chinese and English.
The disaster struck the China-Nepal border on August 26, when a fast-moving chain mudslide was triggered by the collapse of a high-altitude glacier. The event caused heavy casualties and left many people missing.
According to the latest figures from Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the death toll had risen to 1,385 as of 11:00 local time on Friday. A further 5,130 people remain unaccounted for.
The arrival of the fifth batch underscores the scale of the relief effort still under way in the affected regions, where search and recovery work continues amid the large number of missing persons.
