China Says It Will Protect Its Interests as US Prepares New Iran Sanctions
China's foreign ministry says it will safeguard its rights as the US readies new Iran sanctions aimed at trading partners, urging all parties to act with restraint.
China has said it will take necessary measures to safeguard its interests as the United States gears up to announce a fresh round of sanctions against Iran, a move expected to target Tehran's trading partners.
Speaking at a routine press briefing on Monday, foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Beijing would closely monitor the situation and act as required to protect its rights. He did not specify what steps China might take.
Lin also called on all parties to exercise rationality and restraint, cautioning that sanctions and pressure tactics are unlikely to resolve underlying issues.
The remarks come ahead of a scheduled press conference by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who has threatened to impose what he described as "the toughest sanctions in history" on Iran. Bessent has also urged China to cooperate with Washington's efforts.
The development adds to existing friction between Beijing and Washington over Iran policy, with China maintaining economic ties with Tehran despite US pressure.
