China Defends Border Talks, Hits Back at US Sanctions and Tech Claims

At a regular press briefing on August 24, 2026, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian addressed a range of international issues, including upcoming border talks with India, US sanctions policy, and criticism of Chinese technology firms.

China-India Border Talks

Lin confirmed that the upcoming meeting of Special Representatives on the China-India boundary question will serve as a key platform for dialogue. He noted that last year's successful 24th meeting produced several common understandings. The upcoming session will continue in-depth communication on the border issue, aiming to maintain peace and tranquility in border areas in line with agreements reached by leaders of both countries. Bilateral relations and international and regional issues will also be discussed.

Response to US Sanctions Threat on Iran

Asked about US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's reported threat of secondary sanctions on countries trading with Iran, Lin stated that sanctions and pressure are counterproductive. He argued they exacerbate tensions and escalate situations, harming global economic development and financial stability. China urged all parties to exercise restraint and return to dialogue and political solutions. Beijing will closely monitor developments and take necessary measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests.

Rebuttal of US Tech Accusations

Responding to US officials' social media attacks on Chinese technology companies, Lin dismissed the claims as fabricated and distorted. He characterized the remarks as blatant technological bullying and unilateral coercion, which China firmly opposes.

Hong Kong Verdicts

Addressing international concern over the guilty verdicts for the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China and individuals Lee Cheuk-yan, Albert Ho Chun-yan, and Chow Hang-tung, Lin rejected foreign criticism. He stated that certain countries are maliciously smearing Hong Kong and interfering in China's internal affairs. Lin asserted that the defendants' crimes were clear and serious, and that the Hong Kong SAR government's actions were reasonable and lawful. He urged relevant parties to respect China's sovereignty and stop political manipulation.

China-Indonesia Cooperation

On bilateral ties, Lin highlighted the success of the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway, which has carried over 16 million passengers and improved local transportation. He stated that the new China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue Mechanism will deepen practical cooperation and advance high-quality Belt and Road projects. China expressed readiness to work with Indonesia to deliver more outcomes in infrastructure and inject new impetus into both countries' modernization.
