China Vows Stronger Support for New Energy Vehicle Sector
China's MIIT vice minister announced continued policy support for the NEV sector, focusing on quality, autonomous driving safety, and international cooperation.
Beijing, August 26: China has pledged to intensify its support for the new energy vehicle (NEV) industry, with a focus on enhancing product quality, ensuring autonomous driving safety, and deepening global cooperation. The announcement was made by Xin Guobin, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), during a press conference held by the State Council Information Office on Wednesday.
Xin highlighted the sector's remarkable growth during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025). Annual NEV sales in China jumped from 1.367 million units to 16.49 million units, with the share of NEV sales in the total new car market surging from 5.4 percent to 47.9 percent. The industry's scale expanded from the 1-million-unit level to the 10-million-unit level.
He noted that China's NEV output, power batteries, and key materials now account for over 70 percent of the global total. Chinese NEV products are exported to more than 100 countries and regions, reflecting the sector's growing international influence.
Looking ahead to the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), the ministry has formulated a development plan for the intelligent and connected NEV industry. This plan aims to promote high-quality growth through a series of measures, including the prudent advancement of pilot programs for market access and on-road operation of intelligent connected vehicles.
Xin emphasized the importance of improving the industry governance system. He stated that the ministry will step up supervision and inspection of product manufacturing consistency to safeguard consumer rights and standardize competitive order within the industry.
On the international front, Xin said China will deepen cooperation and exchanges, utilizing multilateral and bilateral mechanisms. The country aims to strengthen coordination in international standards and regulations, improve cross-border logistics and investment financing infrastructure, and steadily advance international trade and investment cooperation.
"We will make China deliver more contributions to the transformation and upgrading of the global automotive industry," Xin said, underscoring the country's commitment to the sector's global development.
