China's Politburo Meets Under Xi; Party Plenum Scheduled for October 26-29

China's Politburo convened on Monday under the chairmanship of President Xi Jinping to deliberate on internal party governance and discipline, laying the ground for an upcoming gathering of the ruling Communist Party's Central Committee.

The plenary session — the fifth since the current Central Committee was constituted in 2022 — is scheduled to be held in Beijing from October 26 to 29, according to an official statement.

More than 300 full and alternate members of the Central Committee, the party's largest top decision-making body, are expected to take part. The meeting will centre on "several major issues concerning the sustained advancement of full and rigorous party self-governance."

An official summary of Monday's Politburo meeting said the party must "tackle and resolve well the prominent problems facing party-building, and consolidate and develop well the sound political situation that has taken shape in managing and governing the party."

Plenums are typically held seven times between major party congresses, which take place twice a decade, and the party constitution requires at least one such meeting each year.
