China Intensifies Surveillance of Barrier Lake After Deadly Mudslide in Xizang
China's emergency rescue teams are monitoring a barrier lake at Gyirong Port following a deadly mudslide, as search efforts continue.
Chinese authorities have ramped up monitoring of a barrier lake at Gyirong Port in the Xizang Autonomous Region, following a deadly mudslide last week that struck the border area with Nepal. The Ministry of Emergency Management has deployed national work safety emergency rescue teams to reinforce local operations, officials said Tuesday.
Three specialized national teams have been mobilized to form a joint monitoring group for the barrier lake. These include the National Work Safety Emergency Rescue Survey Team, the National Tunnel Emergency Rescue Team of China Communications Construction Company Chongqing, and the National Tunnel Emergency Rescue Team of China Railway No.2 Group in Xizang.
Equipped with slope radar, unmanned aerial vehicles, and life detectors, the teams are conducting round-the-clock surveillance of the barrier lake dam, the landslide mass on the south bank, and the downstream gully slopes. The heightened vigilance aims to prevent further disasters and support ongoing search efforts for the missing along the China-Nepal border.
