China tells UN that dialogue, negotiations are only path to end Ukraine war
China's UN envoy says dialogue and negotiations are the only way to resolve the Ukraine issue, urging all parties to work toward a lasting peace agreement.
China has reiterated its position that the Ukraine conflict can only be resolved through dialogue and negotiations, with its deputy permanent representative to the United Nations urging all parties to remain patient and engage in good faith.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Sun Lei said the protracted war continues to intensify and is leading to mounting civilian casualties. He called on the parties concerned and the wider international community to work together for an early ceasefire and a political settlement.
"Dialogue and negotiations are the only way to solve the Ukraine issue," Sun said. He cautioned that parties should not abandon efforts simply because talks are difficult, nor refuse engagement due to existing differences. Instead, he urged them to demonstrate patience and good faith to gradually build mutual trust and consensus.
Sun stressed that all parties should work toward a comprehensive, lasting and binding peace agreement. He also called for an end to all attacks targeting civilians, urging strict compliance with international humanitarian law and protection of civilian infrastructure.
Beijing further appealed to regional countries and the international community to intensify diplomatic efforts aimed at promoting peace talks and mediation. Sun voiced opposition to any moves that "fan the flames" or seek to create division and confrontation.
China, he said, is ready to join international efforts to achieve an early ceasefire and lasting peace and stability in the region.
