China's UN Envoy Urges Dialogue to End Ukraine Crisis

China's permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, urged all parties to the Ukraine crisis to stay committed to dialogue and negotiations, telling the Security Council that a political settlement remains the only viable path forward.

Speaking during a briefing held under the formal agenda item on the maintenance of peace and security of Ukraine, Fu noted that the fighting has continued for four years, with civilian casualties mounting and the crisis producing widening spillover effects.

He called on the relevant parties to exercise calm and restraint, work to de-escalate the situation, and keep the prospects for peace intact.

Fu emphasised that dialogue and negotiations are the sole workable route to resolving the conflict, and welcomed recent contacts and exchanges among major stakeholders.

"The negotiating table offers a starting point for peace," he said. "Although significant differences remain, the relevant parties can find solutions and move toward peace through sustained dialogue."

Reiterating China's long-standing position, the envoy said the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries should be respected, the purposes and principles of the UN Charter should be observed, and the legitimate security concerns of every nation ought to be taken seriously. All efforts conducive to a peaceful resolution should be supported, he added.

Fu said China has consistently worked to promote peace and dialogue and stands ready to cooperate with the wider international community in playing a constructive role in the search for a political solution to the crisis.
