China Urges Global Action to Save Sudan's War-Affected Education
China urges more international support for Sudan's education, where conflict has kept nearly 8 million children out of school.
China has called on the international community to step up support for education in Sudan, where nearly eight million children have been forced out of school by ongoing armed conflict. The appeal was made during a United Nations Security Council meeting on Friday dedicated to the education crisis in the country.
Sun Lei, charge d'affaires of China's Permanent Mission to the UN, said the conflict has not only kept millions of children from learning but has also reduced many schools to ruins, disrupting the development of an entire generation. He stressed that acts harming children must be held accountable under the law and should never be tolerated or condoned.
Sun urged greater international input to rebuild damaged school buildings, train more teachers, ensure the supply of teaching materials, and use information technology to expand educational resources and teaching methods. Such efforts, he said, would help more students regain access to learning.
The Chinese envoy also called on all parties to the conflict to end hostilities as soon as possible and return to the path of political settlement, which he described as essential for restoring normalcy and safeguarding the future of Sudan's children.
