China Urges US to Exercise 'Extreme Caution' on Taiwan Arms Sales

China's defence ministry on Thursday urged the United States to exercise "extreme caution" regarding any arms sales to Taiwan, reiterating Beijing's long-standing opposition to such transfers.

Speaking at a regular press briefing in Beijing, defence ministry spokesperson Jiang Bin said Washington should be highly cautious about selling weapons to the island. He did not elaborate on specific pending deals or provide further details.

Jiang also emphasised that the military relationship between the United States and China should remain stable, sound and sustainable. The comments come amid ongoing tensions between the two powers over a range of issues, including Taiwan.

Beijing considers Taiwan a part of its territory and has consistently opposed foreign arms sales to the island. The United States has maintained its own position on such sales, which it says are consistent with its obligations and its longstanding policy.

The spokesperson's remarks underscore the continued sensitivity of the Taiwan issue in US-China relations and the importance both sides place on managing their military ties.
