Chirag Paswan Says He Feels Ashamed as NDA Ally Over Bihar Crime Against Women

Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) leader Chirag Paswan has publicly criticised the Bihar government over a spate of crimes against women, saying he feels ashamed to be part of a dispensation under which such incidents occur.

Speaking at a conclave in Patna on September 26, 2026, Mr. Paswan referred to recent molestation cases involving minor girls in Jamui, Samastipur, Banka and other districts, and said the incidents bring shame to Bihar. He asked why such cases were recurring in the State and argued that it should be everyone's collective responsibility to prevent them.

Mr. Paswan, whose party is an NDA ally in Bihar, questioned the functioning of the local police, asking what they were doing on the ground and how they were allowing such incidents to happen. He suggested strict action against officers who fail to perform their duties.

"There is no fear of the police, and if there would be no fear, what kind of law and order is it?" he said, adding that as an alliance partner the government could send him a notice or remove him, but that it would make no difference to him and he would continue to raise the question.

The Union Minister said no one was feeling safe in the present scenario and that he could not run away from the fact as a member of the government and an alliance partner. He said the morale of criminals had risen and stressed the need to establish the rule of law and fear of the law.

Expressing his anger, he asked what kind of image Bihar was projecting nationally and said an atmosphere of fear and insecurity must have taken hold among daughters. He said he bore a greater responsibility because he was part of the government and that he would neither remain silent nor enjoy the perks of power while turning a blind eye.

After the Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal (United), LJP (RV) is the third-largest constituent of the Samrat Choudhary-led NDA government in Bihar, with 19 MLAs and 5 MPs.

The remarks drew a sharp response from Rohini Acharya, daughter of Rashtriya Janata Dal national president Lalu Prasad. In a post on X on September 27, 2026, she asked Mr. Paswan to resign from the Union Cabinet if he felt ashamed.

She questioned which auspicious moment he was waiting for to resign, and said that staying on in the government while carrying the burden of shame was something to learn from him. She also said that expressing sorrow only through statements and shedding crocodile tears was his old pastime, and asked whether he was waiting for a no-objection certificate before signing his resignation letter.
