CIIL to bring out 75 introductory volumes on linguistics
CIIL will publish 75 introductory linguistics books, with 15 focused on Indian grammatical traditions and Indian perspectives in core linguistic areas.
The Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) has announced plans to prepare around 75 introductory books in linguistics, with a special emphasis on Indian languages and intellectual traditions. The announcement was made by CIIL Director Basavaraj Kodagunti on Monday at the inauguration of a two-week orientation programme on Indian Grammatical Traditions at the institute.
According to Kodagunti, roughly 15 of the planned volumes will be dedicated to Indian grammatical traditions. The remaining books will incorporate Indian perspectives into core linguistic subjects such as phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics.
The Director urged younger scholars, especially teachers and researchers, to take forward the study of these traditions and weave them into their academic work. He stressed that Indian grammatical traditions are not limited to Sanskrit alone.
Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Pali, Prakrit, and several other Indian languages possess their own distinct traditions and histories of grammatical analysis. Kodagunti also highlighted the historical interaction among these diverse linguistic traditions as a defining feature of India's intellectual heritage.
