The decision was announced on Wednesday before the Chief Justice of India, with CJP co-convenor Saurav Das reading out a statement explaining the move.
According to the statement, the Centre has given assurances that it will withdraw the First Information Reports (FIRs) registered against protesters. In light of these assurances, the CJP said it "deems it appropriate to withdraw the march of September 5."
The development marks a significant turn in the ongoing protests over the medical entrance exam, which have seen sustained demonstrations across the country. The CJP's decision to cancel the march comes after weeks of agitation and multiple rounds of talks with government representatives.
The withdrawal of the march is conditional on the government fulfilling its commitment to drop the cases against those who participated in the protests. The CJP has not yet indicated whether it will resume protests if the assurances are not implemented.
