Tamil Nadu CM felicitates constable who clung to smugglers' SUV for 40 km

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday felicitated head constable M. Velmurugan, who clung to the roof rails of a moving SUV for more than 40 km to stop three gutkha smugglers from escaping.

The officer, attached to the Kovilpalayam police station in Coimbatore, was honoured in the presence of Director General of Police and Head of Police Force Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, September 27, when the three men, hailing from Rajasthan, attempted to flee with a large consignment of gutkha. According to the Coimbatore District (Rural) Police, Mr. Velmurugan climbed atop the vehicle and stayed on its roof for over 40 km, risking his life to prevent the accused from getting away.

Coordinated police action eventually intercepted the SUV near Avinashi in Tiruppur district. Three people were arrested and 231 kg of gutkha was seized.

The Chief Minister personally called on Mr. Velmurugan to convey his appreciation, recognising his exceptional courage, presence of mind and dedication to duty. Mr. Aggarwal also congratulated the constable for his exemplary commitment.
