Bharat Ratna Scientist CNR Rao Gets Voter Roll Name-Mismatch Notice
Scientist CNR Rao has been served a notice over a spelling mismatch in his name during Karnataka's voter roll clean-up exercise.
Bengaluru: Bharat Ratna awardee and renowned chemist Prof. CNR Rao has been issued a notice for a 'self-name mismatch' during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Karnataka.
The discrepancy arises from a single extra letter. While his name appears as 'Prof CNR Rao' in older electoral records, the current rolls list him as 'Proff CNR Rao'.
According to reports, the notice requires Rao to appear for a hearing in Malleshwaram, near the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), to resolve the matter. However, a representative from Rao's office stated that no physical notice has been received yet. The representative noted that the notice appears to have been uploaded on the Election Commission of India's website and that the only issue is the extra 'f' in the prefix.
Rao, born in Bengaluru in 1934, is a pioneer in solid-state and materials chemistry. He founded the Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit at IISc in 1976 and served as the institute's director from 1984 to 1994.
This incident follows a similar case involving Padma Shri awardee Harekala Hajabba, who received a notice for a name mismatch in Mangaluru. Karnataka's Chief Electoral Officer had clarified that Hajabba's issue was resolved. The SIR exercise has generated over 43.81 lakh notices across the state, with over 7.31 lakh delivered to electors so far.
