The Nana Patekar-led film 'The Confession of Mary' is set to be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 9 at 7:30 pm. Directed by Ananth Mahadevan and produced by NH Studioz, the film features an ensemble cast including Adil Hussain, Ashish Vidyarthi, Gautam Rode, Pankhuri Awasthi, and Joy Sengupta.
The film is rooted in a true-life incident that combines suspense, crime, and moral dilemmas. It draws from the 1966 Madatharuvi case in Kerala, where a Catholic priest, Father Benedict Onamkulam, was arrested and tried for the murder of a widow named Mariyakutty. The priest claimed he knew details only through the seal of confession and could not disclose them. A sessions court sentenced him to death, but the Kerala High Court acquitted him in 1967.
Director Ananth Mahadevan said the film explores choices people make when truth comes with a price, aiming to keep suspense intact while raising moral questions. The TIFF market screening is expected to help the film connect with international distributors and industry professionals. Shreyans Hirawat of NH Studioz expressed excitement about presenting the film to a global audience. TIFF runs from September 10 to 20.
