Nana Patekar, Ashish Vidyarthi Lead Crime Drama 'The Confession Of Mary' to Toronto Premiere

Veteran actors Nana Patekar, Ashish Vidyarthi, and Adil Hussain headline 'The Confession Of Mary', a crime drama set to premiere at TIFF.

A new crime drama featuring veteran actors Nana Patekar, Ashish Vidyarthi, and Adil Hussain is set for its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Ananth Narayan Mahadevan, the film is titled The Confession Of Mary.

The narrative is rooted in a chilling chapter of Indian legal history: the 1966 Madatharuvi murder case from Kerala. The story unfolds in June of that year, revolving around the death of Mariyakkutty, a 43-year-old widow and mother of five. Her body was discovered near the Madatharuvi stream in Ranni, and the case drew national attention after eyewitnesses reported seeing her with a Roman Catholic priest shortly before her death.

A week after the incident, 37-year-old Father Benedict Onamkulam was arrested. Accused of luring Mariyakkutty with the promise of employment, the priest was subsequently tried and convicted. The District Sessions Court handed down a death sentence, marking the first time a Catholic priest in India received capital punishment for murder. The film explores the events that follow this verdict, which form the core of its narrative.

The project is produced by Subhash Kale and Narendra Hirawat under the banners of Camera Take Films Production and N H Studioz, respectively. The cast also includes Gautam Rode, Joy Sengupta, Neha Mahajan, Pankhuri Awasthi, and Meenakshi Martins. The screenplay is written by C P Surendran, with music composed by Amar Mohile.

The Confession Of Mary is positioned as a cinematic examination of faith, institutional pressure, and the pursuit of truth. Following its screening at Toronto, the makers are expected to announce further details regarding its theatrical release.
