Punjab Congress Councillor Shot Dead in Mamdot, Attackers Chased His Bike

Congress councillor Gurpreet Singh Gopi was shot dead in Punjab's Mamdot town after attackers chased his motorcycle and fired. Police have identified suspects.

A Congress municipal councillor was shot dead in Punjab's Mamdot town on Saturday after armed assailants chased his motorcycle and opened fire, police said.

Gurpreet Singh Gopi was riding a motorcycle with another man, identified as Harpreet, when attackers in a car pursued them and fired, according to Senior Superintendent of Police Bhupinder Singh Sidhu. Gopi died at the scene.

Police said an old dispute, possibly linked to elections, is a key line of investigation. The attackers also fired at a separate car carrying friends of Gopi that was following the motorcycle. Investigators are working to establish the full sequence of events.

"The two parties had an old dispute. The attackers have been identified and our teams have been formed. We will arrest them as soon as possible," SSP Sidhu said. He added that the main accused has a criminal background.

Multiple police teams have been formed and raids are underway at various locations. The killing has raised fresh concerns about law and order in the state, and the alleged election-related motive is likely to draw political attention.
