Congress alleges MGNREGA dismantled, job guarantee undermined in Ballia

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh says MGNREGA has been destroyed, citing Ballia job card holders' disillusionment with the new Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin).

The Congress party has accused the Modi government of dismantling the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), calling it the "lifeline of the poor," and of conspiring to strip workers of their guaranteed employment.

Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh shared a media report on X, highlighting that job card holders in Ballia district are becoming increasingly disillusioned with the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin). According to Ramesh, this growing discontent is clearly reflected in departmental statistics.

The remarks come amid ongoing political debate over rural employment schemes, with the opposition asserting that the replacement of MGNREGA with the new mission has failed to provide the same level of security and work assurance to rural households. The Congress has framed the issue as a direct attack on the rights of the poor, alleging a deliberate effort to erode the employment guarantee framework.
