Congress rejigs state in-charges ahead of Punjab, Gujarat polls
Congress appoints Sachin Pilot as Punjab in-charge, shifts Bhupesh Baghel to Assam, and gives Gujarat to Randeep Surjewala ahead of state polls.
The Congress party has announced a significant reshuffle of its state-level organisational leadership, appointing new general secretaries in-charge for several states with immediate effect. The changes come as the party prepares for assembly elections in Punjab and Gujarat.
Sachin Pilot has been named the new general secretary in-charge of Punjab, replacing Bhupesh Baghel. Baghel has been reassigned to Assam in the same capacity. Punjab is scheduled to go to the polls early next year.
In a parallel move, Randeep Singh Surjewala has been given additional charge of Gujarat, where assembly elections are expected later next year. Surjewala will continue to oversee Karnataka, which recently witnessed a smooth transition of power.
The party has also filled several other key positions. Sukhdeo Bhagat will now handle Chhattisgarh, Dr. Sirivella Prasad takes charge of Maharashtra, and P.V. Mohan has been appointed for Andhra Pradesh.
A statement from AICC general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal confirmed the appointments, noting that the Congress president had reassigned functionaries for different states. The party also acknowledged the contributions of outgoing in-charges Jitendra Singh, Ramesh Chennithala, and Manickam Tagore. Mukul Wasnik will continue in his role as general secretary.
