Council members oppose AI as substitute for third language in schools
Legislative Council members across parties raised objections to replacing the third language with AI in high schools, but the Chairman declined a discussion.
Members of the Legislative Council belonging to different political parties on Tuesday sought to raise the issue of a proposal to introduce Artificial Intelligence as an alternative to the third language in high schools from the current academic year. The move comes amid protests by language teachers across the State against the plan.
BJP member N. Ravikumar flagged the matter in the House, and Congress members Puttanna and Balkees Banu also associated themselves with the demand for a debate.
Chairman Saleem Ahmed acknowledged that he had received petitions from members on the subject, but declined to permit a discussion. He said the session had been convened specifically to deliberate on the drought situation and the K. Kasturirangan report. He assured the House that he would bring the matter to the attention of Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.
Earlier, the Deshiya Bhasha Hitarakshana Vedike, a forum working for the protection of indigenous languages, urged the State government to teach AI as a separate subject instead of allowing it to replace the third language.
