Ambulance driver and wife jump into Godavari; toddler found alone on bridge

A couple jumped into the Godavari River from Chinchinada bridge, leaving their three-year-old son behind. Search operations continue.

A search is underway in West Godavari district for a couple who reportedly jumped into the Godavari River from the Chinchinada bridge on Thursday night. The couple, identified as D. Venkata Sai (31) and his wife Sireesh (27), left their three-year-old son on the bridge before taking the step.

Venkata Sai, a native of Velpuru village in Tanuku mandal, worked as an ambulance driver at a private hospital. Police suspect financial difficulties drove the couple to the extreme action.

According to Chinchinada Sub-Inspector M. Raj Kumar, the family arrived at the bridge on Thursday night. After leaving the child on the bridge, the couple jumped into the river. Search operations continued through Friday but yielded no trace of the couple.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been deployed for the search, which is scheduled to resume on Saturday. Police have registered a missing case and are investigating the matter.

Authorities have urged those facing stress or suicidal thoughts to seek help by contacting the West Godavari police helpline at 9490401725.
