CPI(M) to Hold Extended Kerala State Committee Meeting in Kozhikode from Sept 13

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) will convene a three-day extended Kerala State committee meeting in Kozhikode beginning September 13, with arrangements for the event now complete. The gathering is being held in the wake of the party and the Left Democratic Front's defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections in the State.

Organising committee chairperson P.A. Mohamed Riyas, MLA, general convener and CPI(M) Kozhikode district secretary M. Mehboob, and treasurer and former MLA A. Pradeepkumar briefed the media on the preparations. They said around 300 participants would attend, including State committee members, district secretariat members from across Kerala, and representatives of the party's mass organisations. Polit Bureau members are also expected to be present.

General secretary M.A. Baby will inaugurate the meeting on September 13 at the AKG Auditorium near the CPI(M) Kozhikode district committee office.

According to party sources, the defeat is not being viewed in isolation but as a consequence of a weakening of the party's organisational strength, its political line and strategies, and the way these were implemented. Important leadership decisions in Communist parties are ordinarily taken at Party Congress meetings or specially convened plenum events. Extended meetings are held when neither is in session but there is a need to deliberate on significant ideological and organisational matters.

Mr. Riyas said the meeting would take up a report prepared by the State committee on the election debacle, following two days of discussions among State committee and State secretariat members. The party's central committee has already published its own review report on the Assembly elections. District committees are expected to hold follow-up discussions in the coming months.

The extended State committee meeting will conclude with a public rally culminating at the Freedom Square on the Kozhikode beach on September 15. Around one lakh people are expected to attend.

Ahead of the meeting, family gatherings have been organised by the 271 committees in the district, with around one lakh people having taken part. About 250 local committees have completed their events so far, and the remaining ones are to be finished by Friday. An artists' camp was held at the Government Higher Secondary School, Karaparamba, on August 29, and a meeting of cultural activists, writers, and artists was held in Kozhikode city on Thursday, Mr. Riyas added.
