Tornado-Like Storm Wreaks Havoc in Cremona, Injuring Dozens

A powerful storm system tore through the northern Italian city of Cremona on Friday, leaving dozens injured and causing widespread destruction. The intense weather, which brought tornado-like winds and large hail, struck the city for a brief but devastating period, prompting a large-scale emergency response and cleanup operation over the weekend.

Officials confirmed that at least 43 people were treated for injuries, though most were reported to be minor. The storm uprooted numerous trees, damaged thousands of vehicles, and left debris scattered across the city's streets. The historic Cremona Cathedral, a prominent landmark, also suffered damage, including to its iconic rose window.

Andrea Virgilio, the Mayor of Cremona, described the event as unprecedented for the city. He noted that while a previous storm a month ago had primarily affected green spaces, this event was far more severe. "We faced six dramatic minutes," he said, expressing relief that there were no fatalities and praising the local hospital for its rapid response in expanding emergency services.

Andrea Piazza, deputy chief of the Cremona Fire Department, stated that the densely populated urban center bore the brunt of the storm's force. Firefighters were deployed across the city to assist residents and are continuing to address hazards such as unsafe roofs and fallen trees. The severe weather affected the wider Lombardy region, with the fire department reporting over 500 emergency calls.
