Cuddalore MP seeks full inquiry into NLCIL worker death, flags safety lapses
Congress MP M.K. Vishnu Prasad demands a comprehensive inquiry into safety and maintenance at NLCIL after a contract worker died in an accident at Neyveli TPS-II.
Cuddalore Member of Parliament M.K. Vishnu Prasad (Congress) has called for a thorough investigation into the safety and maintenance practices at NLC India Limited (NLCIL) following the death of a contract worker at the Neyveli Thermal Power Station-II (TPS-II).
In a statement issued on Monday, the MP said the worker, identified as K. Muthukrishnan, aged 37, was on a platform about 15 metres above the ground at the plant on August 24 when it reportedly tilted. Muthukrishnan sustained severe injuries and was admitted to the Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute Hospital in Puducherry, where he later died.
Mr. Prasad noted that TPS-II has been operational for roughly 47 years and requires a systematic Life Extension Programme (LEP), covering inspection of major equipment, structures, and components, along with necessary repairs, maintenance, and replacement. He said he had repeatedly raised the need for an LEP for the ageing station before the NLC administration, the Central government, and in Parliament, but no clear response or appropriate action was taken.
The MP also pointed to allegations of corruption and irregularities at NLCIL, mentioning that a complaint supported by evidence had been submitted to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and a case was filed before the Madras High Court. He demanded a transparent inquiry into both the alleged irregularities and the worker's death.
Urging the Central government to intervene, Mr. Prasad called for inspection of the concerned departments and fixing responsibility if any official is found guilty. He sought a comprehensive review of safety and maintenance arrangements across all NLCIL power stations, action against senior officials and others responsible for the accident, and adequate compensation for Muthukrishnan's family.
Additionally, the MP asked for permanent employment in NLC for one member of the deceased worker's family, along with other necessary assistance from NLCIL and the Central government. He also urged the Tamil Nadu government to take note of the incident and intervene immediately.
