Cusat to introduce industry-flexible curriculum from next academic year
Cusat will introduce an industry-flexible curriculum, with 20% of syllabi kept dynamic for emerging tech and research.
The Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) has approved the introduction of an industry-flexible curriculum, a move aimed at enabling continuous and timely academic reforms in step with evolving industrial and technological landscapes.
The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor M. Junaid Bushiri, attended by Deans and Heads of Departments on Wednesday. The new framework is scheduled for rollout in the next academic year.
Under the proposed structure, 80% of the syllabus will constitute the core curriculum as prescribed by the Board of Studies, ensuring academic standards and statutory compliance. The remaining 20% will be a flexible component, periodically revised to incorporate new technologies, research findings, interdisciplinary subjects, industrial practices, case studies, and contemporary developments.
A significant aspect of the plan involves faculty development. The university proposes offering training programmes, industry interactions, and collaborations with leading R&D institutions to help teachers stay current in emerging subject areas.
Suggestions for curriculum updates will be invited from faculty, students, research scholars, postdoctoral fellows, industry experts, and alumni. Significant research findings by students and researchers may also be considered for inclusion after review by the respective Departmental Research Committee.
The flexible component is expected to facilitate the timely introduction of new discoveries and emerging technologies, particularly in fast-moving fields such as semiconductor technology, photovoltaics, and biotechnology. Similar updates are planned for Engineering, Environmental Science, Management, Law, Social Sciences, and other disciplines.
