CXMT's Fifth-Generation DRAM Platform Enters Mass Production

China's CXMT says its fifth-generation DRAM platform is in mass production, yielding 50% more dies per wafer and powering new 24-gigabit LPDDR5X mobile chips.

Chinese memory-chip maker CXMT has announced that its fifth-generation DRAM technology platform has entered mass production, a step that could strengthen the country's position in the global memory-chip market.

DRAM, or dynamic random-access memory, is the short-term working memory used by phones, computers and other devices to run applications. CXMT, based in Hefei and listed on Shanghai's STAR Market this year, is China's leading producer of the technology.

The company said the new platform places the tiny structures that store data closer together, allowing more memory to fit on each chip and more chips to be produced from every silicon wafer. It reduced the spacing of key features in the data-storage area to 11.95 nanometres, or about 12 billionths of a metre, using a technique called quadruple patterning, which repeats several manufacturing steps to create finer circuit patterns.

"Our process capability is now on par with the most advanced mass-produced nodes out there in the industry," said Luo Xiaodong, CXMT's vice president and head of its marketing centre, speaking at the 2026 World Manufacturing Convention in Hefei.

CXMT also introduced two 24-gigabit LPDDR5X products built on the new platform. LPDDR5X is a power-saving form of DRAM used mainly in smartphones and other portable electronics. Each product holds 50% more data than the company's previous equivalent offerings and is already in mass production, CXMT said. They are available in two package formats to suit different smartphone and portable-device designs.

According to the company, the platform can produce at least 50% more gross chip dies per wafer than its fourth-generation platform, based on an 8-gigabit-chip baseline. That figure measures the potential number of chips made from a wafer before defective units are excluded, rather than the share that passes final testing.

CXMT said it developed the platform using computer simulations and joint work with Chinese chip-equipment makers on critical production steps. The advance comes as Beijing seeks to reduce reliance on foreign semiconductor technology, with US export controls since 2022 restricting China's access to certain advanced chipmaking equipment and related software.
