Centre Reviews Lumpy Skin Disease in Delhi, Urges Coordinated Vaccination
DAHD reviewed Delhi's lumpy skin disease situation, reporting 584 active cases, no mortality, and over 45,950 vaccinations in 2026.
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) reviewed the lumpy skin disease (LSD) situation in the National Capital Territory of Delhi along with the city's animal husbandry authorities, focusing on vaccination coverage, surveillance, treatment and preventive measures.
Animal Husbandry Commissioner Dr. Naveena B. Maheswarappa led the review on 13 September 2026 and called for sustained vaccination, active surveillance and prompt implementation of disease-control measures. The Commissioner also stressed close coordination with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, gaushalas and other stakeholders, particularly for vaccinating and managing stray cattle, and for tightening biosecurity.
According to the review, LSD is sporadic in Delhi and currently under control, with low severity and good recovery among affected animals. No mortality has been reported among affected cattle. As of 13 September 2026, around 584 active cases were being reported, mainly among unvaccinated and vulnerable animals, including those with co-morbidities, weak nutritional status or those under stress.
More than 45,950 animals have been vaccinated against LSD in Delhi during 2026, and vaccination and other control measures are continuing. The emphasis is on timely vaccination, surveillance, isolation of affected animals, vector control, disinfection and biosecurity.
DAHD provided technical guidance to Delhi authorities on vaccination, treatment and animal management. It advised strengthening coordination with the MCD, gaushalas and other stakeholders for effective management and vaccination of stray cattle, isolation of affected animals, vector control, disinfection and sanitisation, and biosecurity measures, including setting up physical check-posts across neighbouring states for movement control.
The review also underlined wider awareness activities involving animal owners, local representatives, NGOs, schools and other stakeholders to promote vaccination and good animal-husbandry practices.
The Department said it continues to maintain close coordination with States and Union Territories, regularly reviews the situation and provides necessary assistance for effective prevention, control and containment of LSD. The disease situation across the country continues to be closely monitored.
