Deep depression over Bay of Bengal to cross Andhra-Odisha coast by Sept 23 night
A depression over the Bay of Bengal is set to intensify into a deep depression and cross the north Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur by the night of September 23-24.
A weather system over the Bay of Bengal is strengthening and moving towards India's eastern coast, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting that it will intensify into a deep depression before reaching land.
The depression lay over the west-central and adjoining north-west Bay of Bengal and was moving westwards. At 11.30 am on Tuesday, it was centred near latitude 17.9°N and longitude 85.8°E — about 180 km south-southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha, 180 km east-southeast of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, 210 km south of Puri and 270 km east of Visakhapatnam.
The IMD said the system is very likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a deep depression within the next 10 to 12 hours. It is then expected to cross the north Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur as a deep depression during the night of September 23-24.
Under its influence, heavy rainfall is forecast at isolated places in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema from September 22 to 25.
Coastal locations around Gopalpur, Puri and Kalingapatnam, as well as areas near Visakhapatnam, lie along the system's projected path. Parts of West Bengal may also see weather changes depending on how the system moves after crossing the coast.
The IMD has advised residents in coastal and adjoining districts to follow the latest advisories issued by it and by local authorities, noting that the forecast path and intensity can change as the system approaches land.
