Delhi CNG price hiked by ₹3.89 per kg; new rate effective from August 29
IGL hikes Delhi CNG price by ₹3.89/kg to ₹86.98, effective 6 am Aug 29, citing elevated global LNG prices.
Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has increased the retail price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in Delhi by ₹3.89 per kilogram. The revised rate of ₹86.98 per kg will come into effect from 6:00 am on Saturday, August 29, replacing the previous price of ₹83.09 per kg.
The company attributed the revision to a sustained rise in international LNG prices, which has significantly increased the input cost of gas. IGL stated that a calibrated increase of ₹3.89 per kg was necessary to partially offset this cost pressure, while noting that the adjustment is lower than the surge seen in global benchmarks.
According to IGL, international gas benchmarks have roughly doubled in recent months. The European TTF benchmark rose from about $11.36 per MMBTU to $23.35 per MMBTU, a jump of approximately 105%. Similarly, the Asian JKM LNG benchmark climbed from $10.99 per MMBTU to $23.41 per MMBTU, marking a rise of about 113%. In contrast, Delhi's CNG price increased by only about 7.8% during the same period, moving from ₹77.09 per kg to the current level.
The company explained that the escalation in global prices follows the re-escalation of the West Asia crisis, which has disrupted LNG cargo movements through the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, European nations are actively building up their natural gas storage ahead of the winter season, further tightening global supply.
IGL noted that CNG demand has been rising steadily in line with India's economic growth. To meet this demand, a significant portion of the input gas for the CNG segment is now being sourced through imported spot LNG, which has become considerably more expensive.
The price revision applies across IGL's operational areas. In Noida, Ghaziabad, and Greater Noida, CNG will now cost ₹95.59 per kg, while Gurugram sees a rate of ₹92.01 per kg. Other cities including Meerut, Kanpur, and Ajmer have also witnessed corresponding increases.
Meanwhile, the retail price of domestic Piped Natural Gas (PNG) in Delhi remains unchanged at ₹49.59 per standard cubic meter (SCM). IGL has reaffirmed its commitment to keeping CNG an economical and clean fuel option for auto-rickshaws, taxis, private vehicles, and public transport fleets.
