Delhi Building Tilts in Gandhi Nagar, Residents Evacuated Over Collapse Risk

A four-storey building in East Delhi's Gandhi Nagar tilted dangerously, triggering panic among local residents and prompting authorities to evacuate the structure as a precaution. The area around the building was cordoned off to keep people away.

A team from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi inspected the structure after the incident. Officials found a risk of collapse and decided to keep the building vacant while monitoring the situation. Police, fire department personnel and civic teams all reached the spot.

Former Mayor Shyam Sunder Aggarwal said he visited the site after being informed of the development. He observed a crack between two houses and noted that one of the buildings had tilted slightly. He said the evacuation was carried out in time and that a notice had been issued to the owner of the affected building.

Aggarwal warned that the structure could come down at any moment, potentially causing a major accident. He also raised questions about how multi-storey buildings are constructed in the national capital without the authorities noticing, and alleged that such structures have come up due to the connivance of officials. He called for action against illegal constructions and dilapidated buildings that endanger residents.

The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of old and vulnerable buildings in Delhi's densely populated neighbourhoods. It comes days after a building collapse in the Satya Niketan area on September 6, in which at least seven people were killed. That building was being used as a paying guest accommodation for boys.

Authorities have cordoned off the affected area in Gandhi Nagar and are continuing to assess the tilted structure while further action is underway.
