Delhi Braces for More Rain as IMD Keeps Orange Alert; Traffic Hit

A fresh spell of intense rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, swept across Delhi on Saturday morning, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to maintain an orange alert for the national capital. The downpour, which began early in the day, led to waterlogging in several neighbourhoods and threw traffic movement out of gear.
According to IMD data, Palam recorded the highest rainfall in the 24-hour period ending 8:30 AM on Saturday, receiving 84 mm of rain. Lodhi Road followed with 38.6 mm during the same window.
The weather office has predicted a generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of light to moderate rain at many places during the early morning and forenoon. Another round of showers, accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning, is likely towards the afternoon and evening.
Temperatures are expected to remain subdued. The maximum is likely to settle between 29°C and 31°C, which is up to 3 degrees below normal for this time of year. The minimum is forecast to hover between 24°C and 26°C, staying close to seasonal averages.
In response to the conditions, the Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory cautioning commuters about possible disruptions. In a post on X, the force noted that traffic movement may be affected at various locations due to temporary waterlogging and rehearsals related to the upcoming BRICS Summit. Motorists have been urged to avoid parking vehicles under bridges, underpasses, or on waterlogged stretches.
