Delhi-NCR on Yellow Alert as IMD Predicts Another Spell of Heavy Rain
IMD issues yellow alert for Delhi-NCR and several states as a low-pressure area moves east-northeast, likely bringing heavy rainfall.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh alert for heavy rainfall across Delhi-NCR and several adjoining states, following two days of intense downpour that left parts of the capital waterlogged.
The weather office, in its morning bulletin on Sunday, said a low-pressure area that was earlier over northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining southwest Uttar Pradesh now lies over southwest Uttar Pradesh and its neighbourhood. The system is expected to move east-northeastwards during the next 24 hours.
Under its influence, isolated places in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand are likely to receive heavy showers. All these states have been placed under a yellow alert. The monsoon trough currently extends from Sri Ganganagar through Delhi to the centre of the low-pressure area over southwest Uttar Pradesh, and further eastwards towards Tripura.
Capital's Weather Outlook
The IMD has forecast a generally cloudy sky for Delhi, with very light to light rain expected at many places during the afternoon or evening. Maximum temperatures are likely to hover between 24°C and 26°C, while minimums may settle slightly below normal.
The fresh alert comes a day after the capital witnessed heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds, which triggered an orange alert. On Saturday, Delhi recorded 29.8 mm of rain, pushing its annual total to 814.5 mm against the long-period average of 774.4 mm. Palam logged the highest rainfall at 35.6 mm, followed by Lodhi Road at 30.8 mm in the 24-hour period ending Sunday morning.
The sudden downpour on Janmashtami ended a prolonged dry spell but overwhelmed the city's drainage network. Several roads and low-lying areas were inundated, causing traffic congestion at key junctions. Waterlogging near the Indira Gandhi International Airport also disrupted flight operations, with commuters struggling to navigate submerged stretches around the terminals.
Widespread Monsoon Activity
Beyond the northwest, the monsoon is expected to remain active over eastern and northeastern India. Heavy showers are likely in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.
