Rain and BRICS Rehearsal Disrupt Traffic Across Delhi-NCR
Heavy rain and BRICS Summit rehearsals have caused waterlogging and traffic jams across Delhi-NCR, prompting diversions and flight advisories.
Persistent rainfall since Saturday morning has left several parts of Delhi-NCR waterlogged, causing significant traffic disruptions on major roads and highways. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast further heavy rain and strong winds in the national capital.
Commuters faced severe congestion on the Gurugram-Delhi lane, particularly near Shiv Murti, where flooding was reported. The Gurugram Traffic Police advised motorists to take a U-turn at IFFCO Chowk and use MG Road or the Aya Nagar border to enter Delhi. Those heading to the airport were also urged to choose alternate routes.
In Delhi, waterlogging was reported on Road No. 210 from Rotary Chowk towards DJB Chowk and Omaxe, with authorities suggesting Road No. 224 as an alternative. Lower underpasses on the Dwarka Expressway also accumulated water.
Areas around Indira Gandhi International Airport, including Terminal 3, the forecourt, and the underpass connecting Mahipalpur, Mehrauli, and Vasant Kunj, were affected. Passengers were advised to use the Airport Express Line. Indigo issued a travel advisory, warning of possible delays and recommending that travellers check flight status before leaving for the airport.
Traffic was further aggravated by a motorcade rehearsal for the upcoming BRICS Summit, scheduled for September 12 and 13, 2026. VVIP movement affected routes including Sardar Patel Marg, Mother Teresa Crescent, Teen Murti Marg, Akbar Road, Rajesh Pilot Marg, and Subramaniam Bharti Marg.
Fallen trees also blocked traffic near Apollo Hospital on Mathura Road and near Malviya Nagar Metro station. Police were working to clear the roads, but heavy movement was expected. Commuters were advised to use MB Road as an alternative.
