How a Tempo's Symbol and 50 CCTV Cameras Cracked a Delhi Rape-Murder Case
Delhi Police used a distinctive symbol on a tempo, tracked across 50 CCTV cameras, to crack the alleged gang rape and murder of a teenage girl whose body was found in an open field.
A distinctive symbol spotted on a tempo, pieced together from footage across roughly 50 CCTV cameras, became the thread that unravelled the alleged gang rape and murder of a teenage girl in Delhi — a case that began with a decomposed body, no missing complaint and no witnesses.
The girl, believed to be between 15 and 17 years old, was allegedly raped, stabbed to death and left in an open field by four people, three of them minors. According to police, she knew the accused and had been drinking with them before going with them in the tempo.
Her body was discovered on September 13 in a field near Kushak Road. It was so badly decomposed that investigators could not immediately determine the gender; stray dogs had eaten parts of the body, and one hand had been severed.
Establishing her identity proved difficult. Her family had not filed a missing person complaint because she frequently left home and returned after several days. Her parents, daily wage labourers, lacked documents to prove her exact age, and a doctor later assessed her to be between 15 and 17.
With no eyewitnesses and no immediate leads, the probe stalled early. There were no CCTV cameras near the spot where the body was found. A camera some distance away, however, captured a vehicle moving around the relevant time. It was identified as a tempo, but darkness obscured its registration number.
Investigators then set about tracking the vehicle across multiple CCTV locations. Their only distinguishing clue was a peculiar symbol on the tempo's left side. Using that mark, they followed the vehicle through footage from about 50 cameras covering the area and adjoining routes.
"We shortlisted the vehicle based on a round ring type symbol and AC unit attached to it," a senior police officer said.
The analysis led police to the suspected tempo in Khadda Colony, in the Swaroop Nagar area, during a night-long operation on the intervening night of September 15 and 16. The driver was identified and questioned, and the investigation led to the apprehension of four people.
One accused has been identified as Shivam, also known as Sudama and Chuchu, a resident of Khadda Colony. The three juveniles are aged 16 and 17.
Police recovered two knives allegedly used in the crime, clothes allegedly worn by the accused, and the tempo. Further investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events, determine the individual roles of those apprehended, and verify forensic and technical evidence.
