Delhi PWD Weighs 500-Metre Underpass at Mayur Vihar's Crown Plaza Junction

The Delhi Public Works Department is assessing a proposal to build an underpass of about 500 metres near the Crown Plaza traffic signal in Mayur Vihar Phase 1, a move aimed at easing congestion on the busy Delhi-UP Road.

The concept centres on separating traffic streams at the junction. Vehicles approaching from the DND side and heading towards Chilla and Trilokpuri would use the underpass to skip the signal, while local traffic and vehicles turning at the junction would continue to use the surface road. Officials are also looking at whether a ground-level rotary could form part of the traffic management plan.

The Crown Plaza junction currently carries a mix of through traffic, local vehicles and turning movements. During peak hours, these streams converge at the same point, producing bottlenecks and long queues. If the underpass is built, commuters travelling towards Chilla and Trilokpuri could see one traffic signal removed from their route.

The proposal, however, remains at the feasibility stage. The exact alignment has not been finalised, and the department is working out how the structure would plug into the existing road network, where entry and exit points would sit, and how surface-level traffic would be handled.

A significant part of the study involves mapping what lies beneath the proposed corridor. Water pipelines, electricity cables, gas lines, telecom networks and other utilities will need to be identified, and any that conflict with the alignment may have to be protected, shifted or modified.

Trees along the route will also be surveyed, with their species, size, condition and location recorded. The assessment is expected to focus on retaining as many of them as possible.

The Crown Plaza proposal comes as connectivity around Mayur Vihar and the Delhi-Noida corridor continues to change. The ongoing Barapullah Phase III project is separately intended to improve links between Mayur Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan.
