Delhi Building Collapse: Trapped Students Making Calls, Says MLA

A six-storey building in Delhi's Satya Niketan area collapsed on Sunday afternoon, trapping several college students who were living there as paying guests. The structure, known as 'Hostel Daze', came down at around 1:34 pm, prompting a large-scale rescue operation involving fire brigade, police, and disaster response teams.

South-West Delhi MLA Anil Sharma, who visited the site, confirmed that students were trapped under the debris. He stated that some of those trapped had managed to make phone calls from beneath the rubble, indicating they were alive. "Some students are even making calls from within, and it appears there are still others trapped inside," he said, adding that it was difficult to determine the exact number of people still inside.

The building was located near Delhi University's South Campus and primarily housed students who had come from different parts of the country. Witnesses suggested that as many as 15 people could be trapped. Several injured individuals have been rescued and rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where their condition is reported to be critical.

Construction work was reportedly underway in the basement of the building at the time of the incident. At least 12 fire engines and an excavator have been deployed at the site, with additional machinery being brought in to clear concrete slabs and girders. A National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) team is also assisting in the operation.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that a full team had been dispatched to the location. Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood assured that the government was closely monitoring the situation and had directed all concerned teams to take necessary measures to ensure the safety of those at the site.
