Delhi Court Extends Custody of Six in Satya Niketan PG Collapse Case

A Delhi court on Monday extended the judicial custody of six people arrested in connection with the collapse of a five-storey building in South Delhi's Satya Niketan area, which claimed seven lives last month. The accused were produced before the Patiala House Court after their previous custody period expired, and the court remanded them for a further 14 days.

Those in custody include Mahesh Gupta, the son of the building's owners, his parents Urmila, 75, and retired government servant Hariram, 81, as well as paying guest operators Sudhanshu and Shubham Tyagi and labour contractor Sanoj. The building, operating as a boys' PG accommodation under the name 'Hostel Daze', collapsed around 1.30 p.m. on September 6.

Investigators have said Mahesh Gupta managed the building's upkeep on behalf of his parents. The property was leased to the two PG operators in August 2025, after which it was run as a hostel.

Sanoj, who was arrested in Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh, was overseeing repair work in the basement, where waste had been collecting for eight to 10 days during the rainy season. The ground floor was also being repaired for a commercial extension, police said. Authorities are examining the roles of the owners, operators and those involved in the repair work.

The incident has also prompted action by civic bodies, with several Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials suspended. The Delhi High Court is separately hearing petitions on the safety of paying guest accommodations in the capital.
