Democrats Launch Probe Into Deportation of Military Families

Congressional Democrats have opened an investigation into the Trump administration's handling of immigration enforcement involving U.S. military families. The move follows reports that more than 50 spouses and parents of active-duty service members have been detained by immigration authorities.

In a letter sent Sunday to the Department of Homeland Security, the Defense Department, and the Department of Veterans Affairs, more than 60 lawmakers raised concerns about potential coordination between the Pentagon and DHS to deport service members and their relatives. The letter argues that such actions "imperil military readiness, weaken service members' morale, and betray America's promises to the people who put their lives on the line for our nation."

The investigation is being led by Senator Elizabeth Warren's office, along with Senators Richard Blumenthal, Tammy Duckworth, and several House Democrats. The lawmakers are seeking detailed answers on how the agencies are handling these cases and whether current policies align with longstanding protections for military families.

The Pentagon declined to comment, saying it would respond directly to the authors. DHS stated that military service alone does not grant automatic lawful status and that individuals are still subject to immigration laws. The VA has not yet responded.

Senator Blumenthal called the situation "appalling" and said the administration is showing "unbelievable cruelty." He added that lawmakers will be "demanding answers and accountability."

The probe also questions why military recruiters continue to promote immigration protections if those promises are not being upheld. The lawmakers are urging the administration to restore policies that previously shielded service members' families from enforcement actions.

Advocates for military families, including Danitza James of Repatriate Our Patriots, say troops are being betrayed. "They trust our government to take care of their families, and they're not doing that," she said.

The White House has not commented. Republican leaders on the armed services and veterans' affairs committees have also not responded to requests for comment.
