Indonesia's Parliament Approves Destry Damayanti as First Woman to Lead Central Bank

Indonesia's parliament on Tuesday approved Destry Damayanti as the next governor of Bank Indonesia, making her the first woman to lead the country's central bank. The 62-year-old economist was the sole candidate for the position following the unexpected resignation of Governor Perry Warjiyo in July, midway through his second term.

Lawmakers confirmed her nomination during a plenary session after parliament's financial committee had endorsed her candidacy last week, following a 'fit-and-proper' test. President Prabowo Subianto is expected to formally appoint her through a presidential decree.

Speaking to reporters after the vote, Damayanti said she would continue her predecessor's 'good policies,' with a strong emphasis on stability. She outlined plans for the central bank to work closely with the government to keep inflation under control and ensure sufficient liquidity in the economy.

Damayanti takes charge at a challenging time for Southeast Asia's largest economy. Investors have expressed concerns over fiscal management, stock market transparency, and the central bank's autonomy amid President Prabowo's push to accelerate economic growth.

During her vetting last week, Damayanti acknowledged the country faced a 'highly complex situation' requiring stronger coordination among institutions. She pledged that cooperation with state agencies would not compromise Bank Indonesia's independence.

She has stated the central bank would support economic growth and job creation while safeguarding financial-system and rupiah stability. Analysts view Damayanti, a Cornell-educated economist who has served as senior deputy governor since 2019, as a continuity figure in monetary policy who maintains a good working relationship with the Prabowo administration.
