Destry Damayanti Named Sole Pick for Indonesia Central Bank Chief
Indonesia's president nominates Destry Damayanti as the sole candidate for central bank governor, a move that strengthened the rupiah.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has nominated Destry Damayanti, the central bank's senior deputy governor, as the sole candidate to become the next governor. The announcement, made by a presidential official on Monday, provided a boost to the rupiah, which strengthened to its highest level against the U.S. dollar since June 18.
Damayanti, who has served as the bank's second most senior official since 2019, has been acting as interim governor following the sudden resignation of Perry Warjiyo late last month for personal reasons. If confirmed, she would be the first woman to hold the position on a permanent basis.
The nomination comes at a time of heightened investor scrutiny over Indonesia's economic management, with concerns about fiscal spending, central bank independence, and market transparency. The rupiah had been under pressure amid these worries, which were compounded by geopolitical tensions.
Economists have largely welcomed the nomination, citing Damayanti's extensive experience within the central bank and domestic financial markets. Her stated focus on currency stabilization is seen as a signal of policy continuity. Analysts describe her as a pragmatic, stability-oriented policymaker with a pro-growth approach.
Damayanti, 62, began her career as an economist and has previously worked at Citibank and state lender Bank Mandiri. She holds a master's degree from Cornell University and served on the board of commissioners for the Deposit Insurer corporation from 2015 to 2019 before joining the central bank.
The parliament, controlled by Prabowo's coalition, has one month to approve or reject the nomination. The legislature has not rejected a sitting president's nominee for the central bank governor post since 2008. The president has also submitted candidates for other board of governors positions, including a senior deputy governor.
While the nomination is expected to be well-received, questions remain about the central bank's independence. The institution has faced pressure to support the government's growth targets while managing inflation and the currency. The next monetary policy review is scheduled for August 18-19. It is not yet clear whether the new governor will serve a full five-year term or the remainder of Warjiyo's tenure, which ends in 2028.
