Dinesh Sharma takes oath as Lieutenant-Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Dinesh Sharma was sworn in as the 14th Lieutenant-Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at a ceremony held at Lok Niwas in Sri Vijaya Puram, the Union Territory's capital formerly known as Port Blair.

Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr. Sharma. Chief Secretary Gyanesh Bharti read out the Warrant of Appointment during the programme.

Senior bureaucrats, representatives of political parties and members of the business community attended the ceremony.

Mr. Sharma reached the islands from New Delhi on September 13, accompanied by his wife, Jai Lakshmi Sharma.

A former Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Mayor of Lucknow, Mr. Sharma was a professor of commerce at the University of Lucknow. During his time in the State government, he handled portfolios including higher and secondary education, science and technology, and electronics and information technology. The BJP leader was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh in 2023.

His appointment as Lieutenant-Governor of the Union Territory was announced by Rashtrapati Bhavan on September 5. He succeeds Admiral D.K. Joshi (retd.), who had held the post since October 8, 2017.
