No AI Lab Has Sought Antitrust Meeting, DOJ Official Says
A senior DOJ antitrust official said frontier AI labs have not requested a meeting on antitrust concerns tied to safety coordination.
Frontier artificial intelligence laboratories have not approached the Justice Department seeking a meeting on antitrust questions arising from safety coordination, a senior antitrust official said on Thursday.
Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward, who heads the department's antitrust division, made the remarks while speaking on a panel at Fordham University in New York.
The comments follow a public call last week from Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei, who urged that antitrust authorities grant permission for rival AI developers to coordinate on slowing the pace of development, citing safety concerns.
Attention to the issue has intensified amid mounting public anxiety over the risks posed by artificial intelligence. Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon said last week that he had resigned, in part because, in his view, the people building AI sincerely believe it could kill everyone by the end of the decade.
Woodward's remarks indicate that, so far, no formal antitrust engagement has been initiated by the leading AI developers on the coordination question.
