DRI seizes 86 live Tokay Geckos in Assam, two held for wildlife trafficking
DRI officers seized 86 live Tokay Geckos in Mariani, Assam, and arrested two persons in a crackdown on illegal wildlife trade.
Officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) have seized 86 live Tokay Geckos in Assam and apprehended two persons in connection with an illegal wildlife trade deal.
The operation was mounted on specific intelligence about the transaction. Acting on the input, DRI officers intercepted the two persons at Bandar Chalia Gaon Ground in Mariani, Assam, on 22 September 2026.
A search of the individuals led to the recovery of 86 live Tokay Geckos, which were seized under the provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
The Tokay Gecko is listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and under Appendix-II of CITES, the international convention that regulates cross-border trade in threatened species.
The two apprehended persons, along with the recovered live geckos, were handed over to the Mariani Range Forest office in Assam for further action under the relevant provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
The DRI said the operation reflects its continuing efforts to detect and disrupt the illegal trafficking of wildlife species, including those sought for their perceived medicinal properties and for demand as exotic pets in illicit markets.
