Drone Blast Near Bulgarian Gas Pipeline Prompts NATO Review

A drone exploded near an international gas pipeline in Bulgaria on Saturday, prompting a security review and discussions within NATO. The incident occurred shortly after the unmanned aerial vehicle crossed into Bulgarian territory from Romania, according to Prime Minister Rumen Radev.

Radev said the drone detonated just after 5 a.m. local time, roughly 100 meters inside Bulgarian territory. The blast took place about 200 meters from a Romanian compressor station and approximately 1 kilometer from Bulgaria's compressor station on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline. No casualties or property damage were reported, and the area has been cordoned off.

The drone was not detected or identified while flying through either Romanian or Bulgarian airspace, raising concerns about surveillance gaps. Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov noted that the drone appeared to carry a significant amount of explosives, given the strength of the blast and the column of black smoke. He added that such drones are difficult to detect due to their small size and low flight altitude.

In response, Bulgaria plans to redeploy anti-drone detection and countermeasure capabilities from its border with Turkey to the border with Romania. The incident will be raised at a meeting of the North Atlantic Council early next week, Stoyanov said.

The origin of the drone remains unclear, and it is not known whether it was linked to Russia or Ukraine. Both Bulgaria and Romania are members of NATO and the European Union.
