Drone Explodes in Bulgarian Border Village, No Casualties

A drone entered Bulgarian airspace from Romania on Saturday morning and exploded in a sunflower field near the village of Kardam, according to Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev. The incident occurred at 8:10 a.m. local time, with no reported casualties or damage to infrastructure.

The explosion site lies approximately 1,000 meters from Bulgaria's compressor station on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline, which runs from Turkey to Ukraine, and about 200 meters from a Romanian compressor station. Radev stated that the area has been cordoned off, and authorities will determine the drone's exact type after examining the wreckage.

The prime minister noted that the drone was not detected earlier in either Bulgarian or Romanian airspace, highlighting ongoing challenges in drone detection and identification. He also pointed to delays in delivering high-precision radars to the Bulgarian army and promised action to address the issue.

In response, Radev announced increased security for strategic sites and enhanced surveillance along the Bulgaria-Romania border. The incident adds to a series of drone incursions linked by Western governments to the Russia-Ukraine war, raising concerns among NATO members about the need to strengthen defenses against such threats.
