Drones Spotted Over German Military Base Days After Leipzig Airport Incident
Two drones were spotted over a German military base in Mechernich, days after an explosive drone was found near Leipzig/Halle airport, raising security concerns.
German authorities reported that two drones were sighted on Thursday evening over a military base in the western part of the country, just two days after an explosive-laden drone was discovered near a runway at Leipzig/Halle airport in the east.
A spokesperson for the German armed forces confirmed that the drones were observed at approximately 10:00 PM local time over the Mechernich base in North Rhine-Westphalia, located about 35 kilometers from the Belgian border. Military police were deployed immediately after the sighting was verified, and the case has been handed over to the police in the nearby town of Euskirchen, who are now leading the investigation.
German media reports indicate that the Mechernich facility houses a highly secure underground storage depot for military equipment and spare parts, and also serves as a base for personnel responsible for maintaining American Patriot air defense systems.
The earlier incident at Leipzig/Halle airport, a major civilian cargo hub and NATO logistics center, involved a drone found near a Ukrainian Antonov Airlines cargo plane loaded with ammunition in a restricted freight area. This event has intensified concerns about drone intrusions into NATO airspace and sparked debate over the ability of key alliance members, such as Germany, to counter these emerging security threats.
While German government officials have not publicly attributed the Leipzig incident to any foreign state, some parliamentarians have pointed to Russia, which has been engaged in a war against Ukraine for over four years. The Russian embassy in Berlin, however, dismissed the discovery as a "staged provocation" on Friday.
