Dutch Police Arrest 34 After Fatal Shooting in Rural Village
Dutch police arrested 34 suspects after a fatal shooting in Overasselt, where masked men attacked, killing one and wounding two officers.
Dutch authorities have detained 34 people following a deadly shooting in the rural village of Overasselt, about 135 kilometers southeast of Amsterdam. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, left one person dead and two police officers injured.
The attack involved roughly 30 masked individuals, many carrying weapons, who were seen on security footage walking down a street before fleeing after gunfire. Police have said they are analyzing the video as part of their investigation.
The two wounded officers are recovering in hospital, though details of their injuries have not been released. Local mayor Joerie Minses condemned the violence, calling it "completely unacceptable" and noting that the village was shaken by the event.
National police chief Janny Knol described the violence as "unprecedented" and confirmed that officers from across the country are involved in the investigation. The detained suspects include individuals from the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Algeria, though their identities and any charges have not yet been disclosed.
Prosecutors and police have declined to comment on a possible motive. The Netherlands has seen rising gang-related violence, linked to its role as a major entry point for cocaine and a producer of synthetic drugs.
