The Ebola epidemic in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has expanded into two additional health zones, bringing the total number of affected areas to 60, according to the latest government data released on Friday.
The newly affected zones, Biena and Manguredjipa, are located in North Kivu province, the epicenter of the outbreak. Health officials report that the case fatality rate in these areas is significantly higher than the overall rate of 48 percent, a disparity attributed largely to delays in mounting an effective response.
The outbreak, now recognized as the fastest-spreading in history, has recorded 5,794 confirmed cases, including 2,786 deaths. The speed of transmission is outpacing efforts to track and contain the virus, posing a major challenge to health workers on the ground.
Authorities continue to face hurdles in reaching affected communities, and the widening geographic footprint underscores the difficulty of controlling the epidemic in a region marked by conflict and population movement.
